DinnerSolav Souvlaki & Donair

Since the original posting of this article, Sola Souvlaki has moved to a new location. We have not had the opportunity to visit the new restaurant.

Gyros. Every so often we get a hankering for those beef stuffed pitas. There’s a lot of Gyro joints in and around Vancouver. Most of them are so-so: store-bought pitas with dry as cardboard slices of poor excuse for a piece of meat, masquerading as a donair. Back in high school, we used to hang out at Station Square in Metrotown. As an alternative to your standard burgers and fries fare, we’d hit up Solav’s Souvlaki & Donair. It was a cramped little hole in the wall that was sandwiched between the Save-On-Foods and Starbucks. The Gyros, however, were awesome — and the price fit the high schooler’s budget well.

DinnerCafe Gloucester

[rating:4]

The Canada Line construction has claimed many victims over the past couple of years. Some small businesses have closed down, never to open again. We were horrified when a notice of temporary closure appeared on the front door of one of our favourite spots, Cafe Gloucester. It claimed that the close was temporary and that they would return when the construction was complete. We were doubtful and were resigned to the possibility that we would never dine there again.

During the long weekend, Tre and I were driving down the Cambie corridor when we happened to notice some legs hiding behind some window shades at Gloucester’s. We were ecstatic to see Gloucester’s make a comeback. This was one of our favourite spots because they have awesome specials before 6pm and after 9pm.

Tre and I are always checking out the snack section at the Asian supermarket, T&T. We’re curious about what new and innovative snacks are being enjoyed overseas. Of course, it’s a hit and miss. Sometimes you get something great and sometimes it’s just plain nasty — and believe me, we’ve seen and tasted some weird stuff out there.

SnacksMelona Banana Flavoured Ice Bar

[rating:4]

Tre and I don’t often eat ice cream or any frozen desserts on a stick. But the banana flavoured Melona Ice Bars are no ordinary frozen treat. We don’t even like banana flavoured anything, we only eat bananas occasionally because they’re good for you. But today, we happen to be grocery shopping at T&T when we pass the food-tasting kiosk. The poor lady was cutting up pieces of frozen ice bars and handing out samples to the swarm of freeloaders who were devouring them. They were also snatching up boxes of them like there was no tomorrow.

LunchHouse of Dosa’s

[rating: 3]

After getting to a really slow start on a Saturday morning Tre and I are tying to decide where to go eat. At first we were going to hit the The Diner. But we were so distracted by a conversation we were having, we ended up on Kingsway, travelling towards Knight Street. Since we were headed in that direction, the first thing that came to mind was dim sum at Dai Tung, but then we passed by this place on the corner of Kingsway and Knight called House of Dosa’s. We’ve been to this place before when it was previously another South Asian restaurant under a different name. The food was delicious back then, but since then new owners took over, we’ve been reluctant to try our luck. A couple of our friends had tried the House of Dosa’s recently and recommended it, we decided to give it a try.
