DinnerNo. 9 Restaurant

Number 9 Restaurant

Vancouver sorely lacks a good source of late night eateries. I don’t understand why, as a city, we shut down so early. However, if you extend your search out to Richmond, you’ll likely find yourself at a place like No. 9 Restaurant, located in Lansdowne Mall. Now, a 24 hour Chinese restaurant isn’t the first thing thing that normally comes to mind when you think suburban mall — but this is where night owls flock in search of sustenance.

The food here is Cantonese — and No. 9 is well-known for many dishes popular to this region of cooking — particularly its barbeque porks, duck and roast pigs. The dining space is large and open — the center of the room crammed with round tables; the walls flanked with banquettes and booths. Despite the large number of seating available — you’ll likely be waiting for a table if you come during a late, weekend evening.

The portions are generous, so Case and I often share a combination barbeque pork and roast pork on rice. The barbeque pork (Char Siu) is deliciously sweet and tender, and coated in the distinctive glistening, reddish hue. The roast pork is extremely tender and has a fiendishly tasty, crunchy skin.

We like our meal with a glass of iced Hong Kong Style Milk Tea — which is basically red tea and evaporated milk, sweetened with a kind of sugary syrup. The perfect iced HK style milk tea is chilled with a heap of crushed ice as it is served at No. 9. Cubes are not substitute.

Overall: Good. Simple. Food. Perfect for that late night craving.
