DinnerKwong Chow Congee & Noodle House

[rating:4]

Some of us have had to experience the pains of wisdom tooth extraction, followed by a period of not being able to eat anything. Tre and I have been luckier than most. We’ve been able to eat fairly quickly after the surgery, and I mean literally–right after. Though my cheeks were swollen like a chipmunk, I wanted to eat something that didn’t require chewing and was tasty. It had to keep my tummy satisfied at the same time. Tre and I have passed by Kwong Chow Congee & Noodle House many times, but haven’t really been in the mood for something soupy. Tre decided that now was the right time to try this place out, so we decided to do take out.

DinnerTony’s Beef Noodle

Since the original posting of this article, Tony's has changed ownership several times.

Tony\'s Beef Noodle

I’m a total noodle fiend. And Taiwanese beef noodles top out as one of my favourite kind. Even though it isn’t haute cuisine, it’s still difficult to find well-made beef noodle soup outside the streets of Taiwan. Case and I were lucky enough to stumble upon Tony’s Beef Noodle — another unfortunate casualty of the Canada Line business massacre. The one thing that probably kept them from going under: wicked beef noodles.

DinnerTop’s Restaurant

[rating:3]

Back in the days, my boys and I would occasionally need to seek out some late night sustenance. That search would often lead us to Top’s, a 24 hour diner serving a mix of Greek, Italian and classic dinner cuisine. During the smoking ban transition, it was one of the few places you could still sneak in some smokes; getting by with a ghetto ash try (aka an empty pop can). This had mass appeal for droves of delinquent teens and college kids who would saunter in bleary-eyed at two in the morning suffering from post-clubbing munchies.

DinnerCipriano’s

Since the original posting of this article, Cipriano's has closed and been replaced with the Vegetarian/Vegan themed restaurant, Acorn.

Cippriano\'s

I love pasta. I just can’t eat of enough it, which is probably a dietitian’s worst nightmare. They say you should only eat a portion the size of the palm of your hand — that won’t be happening if you eat at Cipriano’s. You’re going to get enough leftovers to keep you busy for a few days. Diners almost always leave with doggy bags. But don’t mistaken Cipriano’s for one of those places that only serve quantity over quality. In fact, the opposite is true — and it’s why we keep coming back. I never understood why people flock to places that serve huge portions at cheap prices because they think they’re getting a good deal — even though the food sucks. You are what you eat, so eat something good.

BreakfastPaul’s Place Omelettery Restaurant

[rating:4]

Paul’s Place is one of our favourite spots for brunch: a selective variety of good omelettes, and the best corned beef hash we’ve ever had! Pretty yummy! It can get pretty hectic here on the weekends, so if you’re hungry, try to show up early otherwise it’ll seem like you’re waiting forever. Here’s a tip, if you get in and there isn’t a hostess around to seat you, put your name down on the piece of scrap paper that’s sitting on a little side table in the front — the one with the names of the 12 other people waiting in front of you.
