When you’re travelling, finding good, affordable and distinctly local flavours is always a challenge. Luckily for us, we stumbled across one such spot near the base of Honolulu’s famed Diamond Head Crater Park. Diamond Head Market and Grill is a local market on one side and a grill on the other. You line up, pay, wait for your food and then you’re off. Or better yet, enjoy your food out on the picnic tables located in the parking lot basking in the sunshine.

Earlier this year, we took a trip to Hawaii, to the island of O’ahu. For the next week we’ll be doing a series on our eating adventures in the city of Honolulu. Hawaii is a state of many cultures, and that is reflected in the distinct mix of cuisine that hail from all over the map. So please follow as we eat our way through paradise starting at the parking lot from the bottom of a giant crater.

Golden Oscar Cafe and Restaurant is a Hong Kong style cafe located in a small plaza next to a little Caesar’s Pizza in Vancouver’s Collingwood neighbourhood. They serve the familiar mashup of Chinese greasy spoon dishes and Asian interpretations of Western staples like pastas and mixed grills.

Chinese dessert places in Vancouver — with the exception of bubble tea houses, which seem to be popping up all over like pimples — are pretty rare. Richmond’s Bubble Fruity is one of those rare shops that serve just desserts and snacks — all made in house served with a smile and a side of character.

Chinatown has long been the bastion of Chinese style barbeque meats. But that crown has been challenged over the years by the city of Richmond’s growing community of restaurants and butcheries. HK BBQ Master — an unsuspecting shop tucked underneath the Superstore of all places — is a pretty serious contender for top BBQ shop.
