Campagnola Roma is the relatively new kid on the block in the Hastings and Sunrise neighbourhood. It’s part of a cluster of restaurants, both older (Le Do and Seri Malaysia) and newer (Red Wagon Cafe, Bo Laksa) providing the East Hastings corridor with a diverse range of restaurants. While the original Campagnolo’s dishes hail from the Northern parts of Italy, Campagnola Roma travels a little further South to Rome.

Waikiki’s Cream Pot restaurant is a noodle scratcher. This European influenced restaurant with Japanese sensibility is decorated like a house out of Grimm’s fairy tale. But we heard they served a nice breakfast with eggs, so we followed the cookie crumb trail to the Monarch Hotel.

Every city seems to have their own take on the hot dog. It’s a like a local barometer, identifying all the cultural idiosyncrasies that makes that town unique. Vancouver has Japadog. Honolulu has Puka Dog.

DinnerPeckinpah

Peckinpah, a Carolina style Barbeque, is located on the picturesque corner of Water Street and Carrall in historic Gastown. The restaurant is perhaps a tribute to Sam Peckinpah, a filmmaker known for Westerns, but is more importantly an oasis for carnivores.

Chasing down a shrimp truck amidst the backdrop of paradise would seem nothing less than a fantastical food lover’s dream. Unfortunately for us, it will remain a dream a bit longer. We were unable to make a drive up the famed North Shores of Hawaii to visit those trucks. Instead we closed in on Blue Water Shrimp & Seafood Company, part of the open air food court at the International Market Place in Waikiki.
