LunchSal Y Limon

Sal Y Limon introduces some Mexican flavour to East Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, offering an assortment of familiar stand-bys like tacos, burritos, sopes, quesadillas and tortas. They take over the space once occupied by the Gold Mills Filipino restaurant, nestled snuggly within Kingsway’s awkwardly positioned strip mall.

Nothing significant has happened to the interior, just a literal coat of (appropriately bright, lime green) paint. Otherwise, the setup remains remarkably similar to the previous occupants. We skipped the tacos and burritos — our sights set on their tortas — curious whether they’d prove a suitable alternative to Los Tortas on Cambie.

Pavo Con Tocino Y Queso	$8.50 - Sliced turkey breast with bacon and cheese.

Case’s Pavo Con Tocino Y Queso was a healthy layer of thick sliced turkey, crisp bacon and cheese accompanied by crisp shredded cabbage, tomotoes, pickled onions and a schmear of black bean between a split bolillo roll. It was a serviceably hefty sandwich.

Chorizo Con Queso $8.75 - Diced, sweet, smoky Mexican sausage with cheese between a split Bolillo roll.

My Chorizo Con Queso featured chopped, grilled Mexican sausage with cheese similarly filled with cabbage, tomatoes, pickled onions and black bean.

Our minds weren’t blown. But with generously portioned tortas running between $7.25 and $9.75, Sal Y Limon certainly makes a good alternative to regular sandwich shops. We’ll need to re-vist for the taco and burrito menu to get a real sense of their full offerings.
