DinnerShanghai Wonderful
[rating:4]
I find it interesting how some Chinese restaurants come up with their names. It either sounds completely made up because it doesn’t translate well in English, or the name simply doesn’t meet the food expectations. But at Shanghai Wonderful in Richmond, the food really is — wonderful. Shanghai cuisine has its own unique characteristics. Alcohol is commonly used in cooking seafood and meats, sugar is used to infuse foods and sauces. And salted meats and preserved vegetables are used to spice up dishes. At Shanghai Wonderful, you can taste all these ingredients. The dishes are well executed, savory and simply yummy.
(Top to Bottom: 1. Stir Fried Green Beans with Spicy Minced Pork. 2. Whole Tilapia drowning in savoury, spicy garlic sauce.)
Tre and I are lucky to get seated right away because the place is usually jam packed. The smell of stir fried garlicky goodness wafts through the air while we had a difficult time deciding what to order. We ended up with Stir Fried Green Beans with Spicy Minced Pork, Spicy Tilapia Whole Fish and rice and for dessert — Pan Fried Pumpkin Cake. The plates arrived looking tasty and colourful. The green beans were delicious and were actually green with a slight crunch. Not the brownish color you get when its been overcooked, or been sitting around the kitchen too long. The fish is awesome! It was slathered in savory spicy sauce with lots of garlic which paired well with the plain white rice. Finally, the pan fried pumpkin cakes were tasty — but were slightly on the greasy side.
Perfect For:
A little taste of Shanghai at a restaurant that actually lives up to its name.
