BreakfastYolk’s Breakfast Restaurant and Commissary

Yolk’s has already taken breakfast up a notch with their mobile food cart. But they soon made some noise early this year by taking over the retiring Brave Bull location to set up a bricks and mortar breakfast restaurant and commissary.

Regular patrons of their food cart will find all their favourites on menu: Yolk’s famous poached egg sandwiches; the chicken and waffles. Their sit down restaurant offers a slightly expanded menu with rotating specials that give breakfast a slightly modern twist.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: unless you arrive right at opening, you’re likely to be waiting in line for a good 15 to 25 minutes (and more on weekends). Inside, much of the old Chinese Aunty furnishings have been replaced with more spare, rustic seating.

Chicken and Waffles ($11.75) - organic fried chicken, belgian waffles, chicken gravy and pure Canadian maple syrup.

Old standbys like the deep fried panko-encrusted avocado and perfectly poached eggs served over truffle-lemon hasbrowns and cripsy chicken over wedges of belgian waffles reaffirm the flavours that made the food cart a hit.

The kitchen switches things up slightly with sly variations like luxuriously tender pork belly sandwiched between crispy english muffins and velvety soft poached egg. Things aren’t without their hiccups, though. We were unable to order the duck confit special (as it was inadvertantly left up from the day before), and our server claimed the Croque Madame was no longer being served, despite clearly being on the menu.

Pork Belly Benny ($14.25) - rashers of slow, roasted pork belly on top of crispy english muffins sitting beneath perfectly poached eggs topped with hollandaise sauce.

Overall, the quality and inventiveness of the breakfast dishes make Yolk’s bricks and mortar worth a try. The menu feels pricey, pushing a breakfast for two over $30 for food-cart size portions. Service is friendly, but excruciatingly slow, which can cause a quick breakfast to spill into an unplanned brunch.
