Ki Isu Japanese Restaurant is a Yaletown joint that’s doing its best to set itself apart from the yet another Vancouver sushi restaurant crowd. It has a tall order. Ki Isu is attempting to stand out with an avant-garde menu that pushes the definition of traditional sushi. Such folly can result in either a refreshingly new experience, or a dismal failure. It’s risky business.

Rose Garden Seafood Restaurant on Kingsway is one of those Chinese restaurants you want to know about. The one that doesn’t win a bunch of awards, or hasn’t been fawned upon ad nauseam by the same circle of local media. It’s the one that is packed with customers that don’t speak English. It’s a dive with crappy decor, hand scribbled specials written in Chinese taped to the wall and grumpy staff — but solid food that can feed an army, or a family if you don’t happen to have an army handy.

Big Lou’s Butcher Shop, from the same guys behind Two Chefs and a Table, is a new venture inspired by old world butchery shops. It’s their attempt to bring fresh, local, seasonal meats, game and poultry to the city’s carnivores. But they’re not limited to just the meats and preserves that sits immaculately, waiting to be grilled and devoured. Big Lou’s has a sandwich counter which offers house made sandwiches that will give you a mouthful of tasty ideas of what you might be able to do with all that protein.
