Out of TownThe Big Egg

The Big Egg Food Cart eschews the more populated downtown Portland pods to serve up breakfast on the go from the congregation at Mississippi Marketplace.

The giant, yolk colored cart shines brightly as it reflects the sunlight. And inside? Well, inside is where the magic happens. The Big Egg is basically one big shrine to the most important meal of the deal, with — surprise, surprise — the humble egg as the chief deity.

The Big Egg has four sandwiches on regular rotation throughout the year with a seasonal specialty that changes up every once in a while.

Today, nothing said breakfast to me as much a steak and eggs. The seasonal special was a winning combination of grilled flank steak, caramelized onions, baby arugula, over medium egg and creamy aioli spilling out of a ciabatta bun.

The Arbor Lodge Sandwich ($7.50): A single egg done over medium with grilled organic portobello mushrooms, balsamic caramelized onions & organic baby arugula, dressed with with herbed aioli on a grilled Ciabatta roll.

Case opted for one of their regulars, The Arbor Lodge Sandwich, a perfectly executed over medium egg topped with grilled portobello mushrooms, balsamic caramelized onions and arugula dressed with herbed aioli on a ciabatta bun.

Our meal came to just over $20 including tips. Be prepared to wait, as orders can take a while, but these generously portioned and well crafted sandwiches are worth it as long is you’re not in a rush.
