LunchDona Cata

Since the original posting of this article, the owners of Dona Cata have claimed to be retired, and the restaurant is now closed.

Lately, I’ve been craving for Mexican food so when Tre had mentioned Dona Cata located on Victoria Drive, we thought we would check it out. At first, I was a little hesitant stepping into this place. The exterior looked suspicious to me… but then again, everything looks suspicious to me. It wasn’t exactly located in the most savoury neighborhood. As we passed by an apartment on the way to the restaurant, a crushed pop can flew out of an anonymous window and landed on the sidewalk beside us.

LunchBean Around the World Yaletown

[rating:3] :

Bean Around the World in Yaletown is a coffee franchise run by a friendly South Asian couple. He’s got a cool English accent and if you’re a regular, he’ll already have your drink started as soon as you step in the door. The dining room is surprisingly spacious for a coffee shop and a bunch of couches surround a big, flat screen TV — which makes this the default guy’s hangout during soccer or hockey season. They’ve also been known to play cool 90’s hip hop like A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul — you know, before Hip Hop started to suck.

DinnerOn Lok Restaurant & Wun Tun House

[rating:3] :

I’m not entirely sure why Tre and I come here. Something draws us to this place. It’s not the food, and its definitely not the sticky tables. Located on East Hastings, this spot is a hole in a wall and has been here for quite some time. On Lok is known for their late night cheap eats and can get pretty busy. With its collective group of seniors, families, gangsters and just plain odd people, there have been times when I just don’t feel safe. Yet, it is the people that come here that make it special. The food itself is another story.

DinnerLes Faux Bourgeois

[rating:5] :

Les Faux Bourgeois is a quaint French Bistro located on a half-block strip of East 15th Avenue, intersecting Fraser and Kingsway. We first heard about it through some coworkers and acquaintances. No one had tried it yet, but everyone heard it was good. So on a wet autumn evening Case and I went to check it out.

DinnerXiang Cuisine

Xiang Cuisine is now Alvin Garden.

Located in one of Burnaby’s slightly dodgier neighborhoods just outside of Metrotown is Xiang Cuisine, a Chinese restaurant specializing in cuisine from northern central China. The bright yellow awning sticking out on the lonely suburban block piqued our curiosity. The restaurant is normally packed with people, which is usually a good sign.
